James O’Brien

I am a Product Designer, with a keen interest in design engineering and the growing roles of new technologies, processes and materials within the industry. I have gained insight into the future of the design industry by taking advantage of international opportunities to diversify my education by participating in engineering and design related study projects in China, Poland and the Netherlands.

I also had a successful placement year in the Netherlands, resulting in the completion of my Major studies project, a conveyor belt measurement system for factory operations.

I have a keen interest in Automotive and medical products.

Saddleledge is a redesigned bicycle pannier rack with an extruded aluminium modular design, designed in response to a brief set by Sapa. It is a sturdy and adaptable load area suspended from the seat post. A slide fit design allows for flexibility of the rack to the user’s specifications. A detailed tool design was done for this product.

Rodalicht is a handlebar mounted bicycle front light - phone cradle.  Powered using dynamo power and a dynamo charged battery pack, this light is also able to charge a phone though a wired or wireless connection. A magnesium alloy construction, with tamperproof screws creates a more durable and secure lighting system to plastic alternatives.
