I find great fulfilment in designing products that allow for a better user experience. I have a range of knowledge in design from the many projects undertaken in University, whether this being related to specific industries, materials or manufacturing techniques. I also have strong management and planning skills after my yearlong placement as a production planner and designer within a timber engineering business. The role showed me how a design could directly affect the business and the production process.
As a designer, I pride myself on my strong sketching skills and ability to communicate ideas to others. I am always aiming to progress and broaden my knowledge by taking on challenging projects and stepping out of my comfort zone. When designing I try to fully understand what is needed of the product and how this can be done in a way that benefits everyone.
Major Study Project:
Precise Needle Syringe
This project aimed to design a disposable Medical Device to work in conjunction with needle syringes that will allow for accurate doses of Botulinum Toxin Type A to be administered without the need to view the syringe barrel while adopting a single-handed precision grip.
The product has been designed in a way that allows the body to be as slim as possible in order to provide the user with comfort and control. The index finger is then used to administer the dosage, rather than using the thumb. A mechanism inside the design allows for dosages of 0.01ml to be given and indicates to the user when a dosage has been given.
Overall, the design provides the user with more control when locating a site for the needle, it also reduces the likelihood of an incorrect dosage.
SAPA-HYDRO Aluminium Extrusion Project:
Wheel Chair Shelter
The project looked to utilise the aluminium extrusion process to design an adjustable wheelchair rain cover. The device needed to prevent the attendant being obstructed when pushing the chair, allow the wheelchair user to reach the brakes, fit a variety of wheelchairs and be simple to install and pack away.
Using hand screws the frame is attached to the chair via two brackets that remain on the chair at all times. The device is then adjusted to the correct height and the canopy is rolled out. Using a combination of plastic hooks and Velcro the canopy is fixed into position. The canopy can be partly rolled in order to form a smaller shelter over the users head. All the components are long and slim so they can be stored in a bag when not in use. The device prevents the need for an umbrella or poncho and once set up does not need to be removed until the chair is packed away.
