Tom Watlow

From having a strong interest in Art and Design throughout my education, the ability to study product design at university has allowed me to explore my own personal creativity in more depth and detail. I have a desire for designing visually appealing and striking designs, where I believe designs should not be rushed, and should feature a high attention to detail in all of its aspects. Designing for the high end and premium market is something I have always enjoyed, and through working at bespoke kitchen company, Roundhouse Design, this interest was further cemented.

My primary interest in design is within the lighting and furniture market, with the future aspiration of having products I’ve designed, manufactured and sold within the real world.

Tulip Pendant Light

Intended to be used in a cluster, or 3-in-a-row formation over a kitchen island or breakfast bar, the Tulip Pendant Light is available in a range of 3 different metallic materials; brass, copper, or stainless steel, and a choice of either European Oak or American Walnut for the stem. The powder coated exterior of the pendant can be RAL colour matched to the preference of the client, corresponding to a colour from the interior of their kitchen. The pendant light emits a warm amber glow and the curvature of both pendant halves meet to create a subtle seam detail at the front. The use of premium and natural materials effectively complement the organic form of the product, creating a high-end design suitable for the intended target market.

ISU Table

The rise of urbanisation with more young people living in cities, coupled with the development of smaller homes, meant there was a need for more adaptable and space-saving furniture. Through taking influence from the Japanese art form of origami, (‘Isu’ means ‘chair’ in Japanese), the Isu table functions as a generic side table which can be folded out to a chair using cut and fold lines. This therefore provides an extra seat space within the small interior, either for general or dining seating, as primary research in the project found seating space within small homes to be one of the underlining issues. Manufactured from veneered plywood with a matte black powder coated steel frame, which can be fully disassembled and flat-packed, the Isu table is lightweight enabling it to be moved to different areas of the interior to suit the user.
