Mim Sharrocks

BA Furniture & Product Design

I consider myself an artistic designer; I love to incorporate elements of outlandishness in my designs. Many of my pieces are motivated by joy. I believe our jobs as designers is to bring joy to people with every object, whether that be through great functionality or appearance.

The Barnaby stool

The Barnaby stool is a piece created from the idea of joy and how surprise triggers joy. A seat which serves multiple functions, a seating solution, a lighting solution, and a trigger for spontaneous happiness. Designed to light up from beneath when the user sits down, creating an element of surprise that hopefully inspires joy. This project brief was chosen as I find the world could always use more happiness, as we're constantly shown the negativity of the world in the media, if an object can cut through the negativity for a brief minute that could help more people to see the best in the world. Process wise this really was an idea that came out of a lot of conversations with lots of different types of people that inspired each new step of the development process.

The Theodore Pendant Light

The Theodore Pendant Light is made from a lighter, solid timber which is stained darker. This creates the same as walnut veneer at a more affordable price point. The light is constructed of three components that stack together and balance without the need for additional fixings. It was designed with simplicity in mind for the consumer who prefers easy-to-assemble items. The light is small enough that numerous lights can be clustered together and it is attractive from all perspectives.
