The current situation around single use plastics has led the world to look for alternatives and replacements. These replacements are currently limited with most people looking toward timbers and metals. These options won't be able to handle the future needs of consumers, and as such there is a need for alternatives. After researching for alternatives to wood I found a hemp-based board and veneer that holds very similar qualities to particle board. This board is biodegradable and comes from all natural sources, it is made from hemp fibers and a bio resin containing a mixture of corn cob, oat hulls and bagasse. To best display this material and its properties I have designed a chair that integrates the hemp board and its origins, a corrugated sheet to replace old PVC versions. This chair hopefully will display the promise and opportunities that this material has for diversifying sustainable options.
