BA Furniture & Product Design
As a designer-maker I prefer my designs to be functional over being extravagant. If my designs can reach the many over the few than I have done my job.
Born from the growing amount of beautiful sarees that are becoming redundant in a cupboard due to ever changing fashion trends, Sundara is about allowing a person to showcase these beautiful sarees that are no longer worn instead of them being left in a cupboard with no use. This product is a mix of beauty, culture and sentimentality.
This project allowed me as a designer to further explore my culture and heritage. As a designer I wanted to explore this key aspect of my culture that is sarees and find a way to showcase them in their entirety.
Modelling and being hands-on with the fabric and materials was key in the design process. Looking at how a saree is placed on a body allowed me to replicate this action through the testing of different angles and folds during the design process.
