SLO , Sustainable Local Origins

Sustainable Local Origins (SLO) is Clarke's self-directed project, aimed at encouraging and supporting consumers to locally source fresh produce. The intention is to provide a simple and effective way to repeatedly source locally, store correctly and celebrate the activity of preparing fresh produce. Sourcing as locally as possible will bring economic, social and environmental benefits, including supporting local businesses, reducing food miles and in many cases improving the quality of purchased food. This will lead to an improved lifestyle for the consumer while also benefitting local and national economies and communities. The materials selected reflect the local sourcing journey, with the use of Beech which is grown in Britain, and is extremely suitable for the end grain tabletop.

The product consists of two parts, a subscription service that ensures repeat customers at local sourcing retailers. Consumers can pick up their produce each week and interact with the local community, selecting locally available, seasonal items. The second part, a storage and preparation table, is for the next stage of the local sourcing journey. It provides space to store locally sourced produce in the correct environment within crate-like drawers. The preparation element enables the client to prepare and cook local produce, celebrating local sourcing and reaping the benefits of increased nutritional value, potentially influencing friends to start engaging with local sourcing.
