Shiki

Shiki is a small piece of display furniture designed with the simple Japanese aesthetic of Wabi Sabi. The project aims to discover and celebrate the beauty of commonplace, much-used and often overlooked objects and tools, particularly where constant use and wear have enhanced their appearance, with the objective of kindling a greater appreciation and more emotional connection from the user.
The concept behind Shiki is to frame and, in doing so, elevate these humble everyday objects. The structure of the three-dimensional frames is inspired by elements from the design of the Japanese-style room and shoji gate, creating a 'stage' for displaying objects; the frames can work in both landscape and portrait to accommodate a variety of displayed artefacts.
