BA (Hons) Furniture and Product Design

Jana Spence

My aim as a designer is to bridge the gap between beauty and function. I design practical pieces that are also aesthetically pleasing and engaging for the user. My designs are often inspired by my love of art and culture as well as my growing understanding of materials and processes.

STACK

A modular storage unit designed with sustainable materials and durable fixings; this unit is a response to the irresponsible design of mass manufactured furniture. Research revealed that young people move between 5-7 times between the ages of 18 and 29. During this time the only furniture available to them, within their budget, is often poor quality and too brittle to move with them from home to home, this results in repeat purchases and lots of waste.

STACK provides an affordable solution to this issue. The simple design appeals to the mass market as it gives autonomy to the customer to personalise and add their own character through drapery and the displaying of their clothes. The modularity permits the user to only buy the necessary components for their specific storage needs. Assembly of this unit is made simple, the only tool required is an Allen key and bolts which are provided, this means users of all abilities can build it.

The Cloud Chair

Inspired by natural forms this chair consists of a structural frame much like skeleton of a hand, combined with padded cushioning which resembles the flesh. This chair is an artistic piece designed to be the focal point in any space. It demands attention and draws people to it, this makes it ideal for story-telling.
