BA Furniture & Product Design

Izzy Tollett

I am a curious, playful designer, inspired by colour and the joy designs can evoke. I believe design should elicit a positive feeling from its users. I am against the mundanity and seriousness the modern world has become and I am dedicated to challenging this norm, aiming to keep the spirit of playfulness and fun alive through design.

The FUNdamentals

The FUNdamentals are a set of multi-coloured blocks inspired by the iconic children’s toy we all know and recognise. Play is a proven way to improve mental well-being and for some reason, as we get older, play slowly fades away from our lives. Why is that? The FUNdamentals goal is to combat this norm and allow all ages the opportunity to play as play is fundamental to creating a positive mental well-being.

The design of these blocks are made with customisation in mind. There is no set way to have them or display them. Instead, the user can display and combine the blocks however they see fit. The dimensions of the blocks laid down are coffee table height, and when the blocks are stood up they are dining table height which helps when it comes to the user choosing how to display them. Whether you want to use them as a TV stand or even as a block just to hold your plants, the choice is yours.

Play is what? FUNdamental

George

George is a cork stool that features bright 'ear' handles and hidden storage inside. The stool is made with children's dimensions in mind, but it can also be used by adults. The idea of George came about by looking into the psychology of keepsakes. It has been proven that children tend to keep items that they have gained a bond with; this happens when an item has a character or personality. As such, 'ear' handles were designed for George, which gives him his cheeky monkey-like character, which ultimately helps with him being less likely to be thrown away as children grow up.
