BA Product Design

Max Zaman

I enjoy learning new skills and practices that allow me to explore a wide range of problems and solutions. I have a drive to discover new material applications and enjoy finding traditional practices from around the world that I can apply in my own work. Going forward I would love to have a role in both the designing and making of products as I find real enjoyment in the conception of products followed by the physical manufacturing process.

The creation of this piece lies in the vast amount of construction waste that is disposed of in landfill annually, despite industry wide claims otherwise. I identified plasterboard as a construction material that is theoretically infinitely recyclable yet has a well established landfill-disposal process. Additionally a large part of the UK's gypsum supply is produced as a byproduct of the running of coal power stations, which are set to be shut by the National Grid by October 2024, meaning a return to the mining of virgin gypsum; inspired by this, I have designed a piece to spread awareness of the issue. By looking at plastering processes from Italy and Morocco I established a process of stripping down waste plasterboard, mixing it with other waste aggregates from construction, and remoulding the material into a piece of furniture. This creates a circular material cycle that can take waste material from a home renovation and turn it into a new product for the home.

Sky play

Sky play represents the next generation in smart speakers for the home. Thanks to four microwave motion sensors integrated within the ?dish? it is able to track users as they enter and move around the home. With a system of play speakers, content can follow users throughout the house, automatically turning rooms on/off and altering content to suit the rooms atmosphere with habitually conditioned machine learning. Designed to be repairable and easily upgradable, users can remove the base and top dish to make alterations without having to replace the entire unit. Manufactured from recycled ABS, the play speaker is sustainable by design.
