Alex Lowe

A multidisciplinary user centred designer keen to find solutions that can be applied to the real world. I have always been interested in problem solving and have attempted to apply this thinking throughout my degree. Exploring an array of processes and materials throughout my journey has solidified my desire to pursue a creative design role. Alex looks to tackle serval aspects of a problem at once, this can be seen in both projects.

Nite

Modern living is having detrimental affects on our sleep habits, which has exacerbated by COVID-19. In this modern world it has become all to easy to pick up a handset. Blue light from these handsets are wreaking havoc on our sleep, aggravated by the needs to stay connected in this modern world. The European Society of Endocrinology have expressed that ‘the longer the screen time, the worse the sleep’.
Nite has a several purposes which are all designed to combat sleep deprivation. Nite is to be turned on an hour before bed so that the user can digitally detox through a screenless design and a voice automated messaging system. Many of us struggle to detox before bed due to the need to stay connected. Being disconnected from society, even for an hour can trigger anxieties. Nite aims to act as a middle ground between connecting and disconnecting whilst improving one’s sleep.

Citrus

Food waste is becoming more prevalent in an ever-growing world. Fruit demand is increasing each year however more fruit is been wasted than ever before.
Citrus looks to tackle this problem with technology not yet seen in the home. Spoiling fruits release ethanol which increase overtime. Citrus is home to an ethanol sensor which will alert the user through colour coded lights when the fruit is at its ripest. Green being the ripest and red meaning do not eat. Having liaised with experts who specialise in sensors this technology could be possible in the home. The user can set the sensor to the desired fruit due to each fruit emitting different amounts of ethanol. The design of citrus has been heavily influenced by the sensors sizing and affordability. Although the design is a concept, Citrus has been designed for the modern-day market. Alex has also looked towards the future and has developed a small rechargeable nano sensor which makes the product more sustainable. The reason Alex decided to design the product for today’s market is because it is easy to say what could be possible in 5 years’ time therefore designing a future concept which would be affordable and realistic in today’s market was paramount.
Citrus will also promote healthy eating as the product will be hung on the kitchen wall ensuring the user is always aware of the produce they have stored. Primary research instructed me that users can often forget what fresh produce they currently have in their home, hence why
